Luna Sage Bodman, a 30-something kooky-hippie type dabbles in psychology, and occasional psychic “cold-readings.”  She runs the Namaste Café in The Stillwell Art Center, one of the largest working art communities in the States.  Luna’s café is next to her brother Cullen’s ’s restoration business where he “can keep an eye on her.”   He is the polar opposite with his Brooks Brothers attire, and no-nonsense point of view, but is also his sister’s greatest protector.

Twenty years ago:

Chad Pierce lived a charmed life.  Son of a wealthy Wall Street Executive, the 18-year-old was pampered by both his mother and father.     He drove a $50,000 car and carried a platinum American Express Card and the bills went directly to his father’s office.  He failed miserably at several boarding schools, and his father was desperate for him to get into a high-profile college.  In a last ditch effort,  Chad Pierce, Sr. sent him to a military school to finish his senior year in time to graduate.   But the family was hit with every parents’ nightmare:  their son had been kidnapped.  The ransom was 1 million dollars.   It was paid and he was found on a farm in Colts Neck, New Jersey unharmed.  The kidnappers were never found.  The trauma of the kidnapping forced Chad to leave school.  His family arranged for tutors and special circumstances so he could get his high school diploma.  But Chad wasn’t emotionally ready for college.  He needed to take some time to regroup.  After a year of traveling abroad, his father decided to put Chad to work at his firm.    He didn’t want Chad to be a ship without a rudder.   Chad enjoyed the rich life-style and adapted to the work environment, as much as he hated it.

He rose to a very high level in the company and married a wealthy socialite.   Life was good.

Present Day:

Luna Bodman always enjoyed it when Cullen received a new shipment of discarded furniture.  She would always sit with it, touch it, smell it, and talk to it to see if she could get any kind of “vibration” from the piece.  Cullen got used to her “aura checking” and humored her with each delivery.  When an old armoire arrived, Luna made a bee-line straight to it.  She was like a little kid who was just given a new toy to play with.  She opened the door of the armoire, wiggled inside and shut the door.  She closed her eyes and heaved a huge gasp.  She quickly pushed against the door but it wouldn’t open.  She was banging and calling for Cullen but he had stepped into the showroom.  Luna remained calm.  She knew her brother would be back at some point.  She could hear her dog Wylie sniffing around outside the armoire.  “Wylie, go get Cullen!”  The dog gave a quick “woof” and trotted off to get Cullen.  Luna waited in the dark cabinet and ran her hands along the inside.  She could feel something in the wood.  Something rough.  When Cullen jerked open the door she almost tumbled out.  She asked for a flashlight and discovered the grooves she felt in the wood were someone’s scrawl.   She took a piece of parchment paper and a pencil and did a rubbing to see if they could make out the words.  She gasped again when she read HELP ME!  Luna is determined to find out where the piece came from but is distracted by a trip to New York City.  When they arrive she discovers there are no coincidences as pieces to the mystery unfold.

Isabelle (Izzy) Flanders was going over a set blueprints for a new indoor/outdoor café.   She and Yoko won the bid on a project being funded by the local commerce commission.  It was going to be the cornerstone of a new market village, and the project would require major commercial materials.  Isabelle remembered one of her college classmates Zoe Danfield, was now the Vice President of REBAR one of the world’s largest suppliers of foundation materials. After college both worked for the same firm until Izzy opened her own business and Zoe moved on to corporate America.

Izzie scrolled through her contact list and found Zoe’s information and punched the “call”  button.  She was surprised to hear Zoe’s voice on the other end instead of her assistant.  Zoe sounded stressed.  Tightly wound.  Izzie told her about the project and Zoe hesitated.  Instead of discussing over the phone, Zoe offered to visit the site and give her a bid.  Zoe’s office was in New York City so it was a quick ride on AMTRAK. It would be good to see her old pal again and she invited Zoe to spend the night at her house.

When Zoe arrived Izzie noticed how tense Zoe seemed.  Almost paranoid.  Izzie decided to take Zoe to her house and try to unravel what was happening to her unraveling friend.  Izzie poured them each a glass of wine and Izzie began to subtly pull out the threads of Zoe’s angst.  It didn’t take much for Zoe to explain her situation.

After the horrendous failure of the condominium in South Miami, there were other reports of structural failures.  Buildings and bridges had been collapsing for decades in various parts of the world, yet some of the structures were less than 20 years old.  Bridges were failing, people were dying.  Buildings were crumbling.  More people dying.  Zoe began her own investigation and detected a common thread:  inferior foundation materials, that led to a horrendous scheme to save money.  She met with the quality control manager and asked a few questions about their manufacturing plant in the Dominican Republic.   He implied he had everything covered; they were in compliance.  In a roundabout way he alluded she might be sticking her nose into places where it didn’t belong.  After a few near-miss accidents Zoe knew she was on to something.  It was an international crisis replete with corruption, yet there was no central organization investigating these events.  Someone had to blow the whistle. Someone had to hold these people accountable.  And who better than the Sisterhood?
